Influential Music videos - Katy Perry

Katy Perry's California Girls music video is influential to my music video because of its bold and bright colours with animations . For our music video we want to include a green screen to give an animated bright effect to appeal more to an audience  capturing the animation of our artist . Katy Perry's music video uses different locations and settings that are created through CGI and the green screen , the bold and bright colours capture the fun and happiness of the music video which links to how we want to express our artist image in our music video. Even though our story narrative is about a couple breaking up and reflecting on their relationship the lyrics and overall emotion is very sarcastic and playful trying to highlight the funny side of the relationship , this is why we want to use a green screen to explore the different type os animation and locations we can use to capture this .

Individual ideas for our music video -- Kate Nash , Foundations

Our music video song choice is Foundations by Kate Nash . I am really excited about taking on this challenge because this song has given us so many creative ideas to put together and take on . We tried not watch the music video first so we just listened to the track and then wrote down our ideas , once we did this we watched the video , our narrative was not portrayed in the music video so it was a whole new idea but stuck to the lyrics well . Our inspirations came from artists such as Lily Allen , Marina and the Diamonds and Katy Perry, all of these artists give off unique characteristics , but a down to earth feel , so we didn't want to make this video 'Hollywood' and tacky , we wanted to create a vintage image that girls like us today are able to look at and see a bit of ourselves in .

Inspirational music videos 2

-->
I chose this Music video because firstly Lily Allen is an inspiration for a music choice and whole persona of the character and music video but also because of the style of it. Lily Allen is a unique London styled girl, compared to the glitz and glam of Hollywood and that is the same for the star we created. The use of bright colours, clothing, make up etc. in the music stands out contrasting to the locations in the music video, for example the café, on the street and at home. This links to our music video and we use a bus stop, bar, a bedroom and a car for different location, these locations are very simple to emphasize the reality of the characters, rather than a huge Hollywood action music video. The use of simplistic and realistic locations captures the narrative as well because the narrative and lyrics are about heart break and wanting revenge on a past relationship and since that is a very common feeing after heart break, people can relate to this music video a lot more.

Marina and the diamonds --- Digipack

i chose to analyse Marina and the diamonds digipack because not only is she a influential artist but her image really stands out and inspired the creation of our artist . Marinas digipack is inspirational as it is very unique and very different from Rihanna's digipack . Marinas digipack is alot less traditional and uses more 'random' colours and eye-catching images. In this digipack glitter is the main focus , on all the images and even on the CD . for my digipack i wouldn't necessarily use glitter but the use of text on the digipack has inspired my ideas to make my digipack more unique. The use of different fonts in texts has connotations of different voices and different emotions capturing the different lyrics and emotions Marina is trying to capture in her music , this links to my music video as the narrative is exploring the view of the artist's take on her relationship and what she went through during it which explores different emotions and feelings . The 'cut out' font is a focus for my digipack as i want to use this for my main font on my digipack as it stands out and gives off an authentic and vintage image off .

Director research - Melina Matsoukas

 I chose the director Melina Matsoukas  , as her work is very unique and popular , she works with big artist such as Rhianna , Beyonce , Ludacris etc . My favourite music video she directed is We found love by Rhianna . We found love topped the charts in twenty-five countries including Ireland , New Zealand , Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It also attained top five positions in Australia , Belgium and the Czech republic and peaked in the top ten of charts in twenty-nine countries world wide, becoming one of the most successful songs in 2011 and 2012, worldwide the single has sold 6.3 million copies making it one of the best selling singles of all time. After working with Rhianna on this music video she then also directed more of her videos such as S&M and You da one . Melina Matsoukas work is described as ' chalk full' of bright colours or crisp black and white images ( as seen in You da one by Rhianna) , smooth spotlights and a tasteful retro video models. Melina Matsoukas says that ' expensive equipment is not necessary for a quality video and one should never think that way: a good video has the right visuals , as well as a conceptualized story and should be exciting and elicit reaction'.

Jonas Brothers - Burning up , Goodwin's theory

--> In this music video performed by the Jonas brothers, you see a various collaborations of intertextuality; drawing on to other texts. The first reference is to James bond, an iconic spy sequence of entering a mission by a boat.  This scene is recognised by everyone, from all different ages, stereotypically capturing the bad guys. However this not the only way we recognise this sequence from James Bond but also the iconic scene of the black tunnel edited around him as he stand there in a bow tie and suit and the glamorous girl on his arm and the expensive car.  Still in the James bond scene it moves to a gambling scene where the camera tracks a close up of his eyes looking at the villain, swiftly moves on to where ‘ James Bond’ jumps over lasers to rescue the damsel in distress, this is a stereotypical scene of a spy movie but incorporating main parts from the James bond films. From this we move onto another iconic scene from ‘Starsky and Hutch’, the chasing of the villains and saving the damsel in distress, similar to James Bond. The camera stops and captures the main character and introduces them, which is very iconic for referring back to this type of movie. To refer back to this intertextuality, they use specific props for example, the sunglasses, moustaches and costumes, emphasising the change in time period compared to the sequence before of James bond. The final piece of intertextuality is the typical kung fu movie, where the student is being taught by their master and finally turns into the master and saves the love interest. The typical mise en scene of authentic and recognisable props helps capture the intertextuality, and reference. The narratives are not complete but come to some sort on conclusions, so they are not in a linear order. Through out they cut between narrative and performance and all three of the artists are apart of both the narrative and performance. John Stewart said that ‘incorporating, raiding and reconstruction ‘, all of these have been used and developed in this music video, using their own interpretations of all of these iconic scenes , helping the audience recognise what they have done as well as letting them relate and connect with this music video.

Rhianna - you da one , Voyeurism.

-->
Voyeurism is the sexual practice of spying on engaged intimate behaviors. In this music video voyeurism is used in able to capture the star image of Rhianna, Rhianna is a sexual icon within the music industry and this has been built upon by the media and how she is represented in music videos, songs, lyrics, performances etc.. The use of camera shots are abele to capture the right parts of her body, giving off a sexual appeal towards the audience, for example, the close ups of lips, legs hips, this shows the outlines and silhouettes of her body. Rather than just showing her in an average way the camera is able to explore the different shapes of her body. But its not only down to the camera but it is the way Rhianna performs to the camera: touching herself in a sexual desire as she dances and always giving eye contact as she dances and sings, this helps create a more intimate relationship between Rhianna and her audience. By capturing Rhianna biting her lip, fingers gives off a teasing playful desire, this creates a more realistic sexual performance rather than her just standing there singing. Rhianna’s dancing is key for exploiting certain body parts as she dances and touches herself her eyes are closed and recites the lyrics ‘ hold me now’ makes the intimacy of the relationship between Rhianna and her audience become more imaginative. While doing this she also recites the lyrics ‘ You da one that I think about all day.’ this corresponds and links together the music as well as the performance of the artist. Rhianna costumes change throughout each setting of the music video, yet all of her clothing reveals a lot of skin and complimenting her figure to give off her sexual appeal. The mise en scenes of all settings are simple yet give off a playful vibe by using big balls as its lets her move around and play with the props.  The music video is edited in black and white this is done so that colour does not take your view off Rhianna, it is a lot more easier to focus on her but also having connotations of the audience being able to use there own imagination and input on what colours they would want to imagine.
